You probably already know how difficult and competitive it can be to obtain funding generally. Everyone longs for it. You can get the money you need by doing the following:
1. Find out about opportunities for funding in your preferred nation:
For international students studying in that nation, there may be specific funding opportunities. Each nation has its own system for financing higher education. To get a better idea of what might be available to you, it's a good idea to research the education system and financial aid options in the country where you want to study.
2. Check with your institution:
Including fully funded scholarships, numerous universities and graduate schools provide funding for their own students. First, check the school's website. Check the department and faculty pages for information about funding.
I did this for my school and discovered that international students who are accepted receive funding automatically. In addition, I will only have access to additional funding opportunities and programs when I return. You can also inquire about any funding opportunities by contacting the graduate studies or financial aid offices of your school. You never know what might happen if you call or send them an email.
3. Try to find scholarships:
Scholarships for international students to study abroad are offered by numerous organizations and foundations. Beginning your search is a good idea at Opportunity Desk. Naturally, it had to be the first suggestion. You can regularly find posts about global scholarship opportunities on the oftec website, particularly the scholarship page. Keep an eye here, buy into the bulletin so you never miss an update.
Other choices include:
- The Fulbright Program, which provides financial assistance to students from other countries to study in the United States.
- The British Council, which has a database of scholarships for students from other countries who want to study in the UK. There are options like the Commonwealth, Erasmus Mundus, and Chevening Scholarship, among others.
- The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), which provides a database containing tens of thousands of scholarships for international students wishing to pursue higher education in Germany.
4. Think about other sources of funding:
International students may be eligible for grants, loans, assistantships, and other forms of financial aid in addition to scholarships. I'll talk more about these in a subsequent post.
However, there are some funding options to think about:
- The government, education ministry, or large corporations of your home nation: It's a good idea to check with your home country's education ministry or embassy to see if there are any funding opportunities. Many countries provide funding for their citizens to study abroad. We have, for instance, the NDDC scholarship, the NLNG Graduate Scholarship, the TETFUND, and others in Nigeria.
- The education ministry or government of your host nation: For international students studying within their borders, some nations provide funding specifically. To find out what might be available to you, it's a good idea to investigate the educational system and financial aid options in the nation where you want to study. Chevening Scholarship, Commonwealth Scholarship, Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship, and others are examples.
